The third and last novel in the trilogy against extremist terrorism “Islam against Islam”, starts with a death sentence and the terrible threat of a terrorist attack against Belgium. The murder of three Euro MPs in Brussels is a cruel way of “showing” that they are up against a real threat. Ariel, who is now on her own, after the death of John Khanlary Taggert, a victim of the Twin Towers tragedy, continues to work as a humble journalist, despite her being a very rich heiress. Ariel was actually inside the European Parliament when one of the three Euro MPs died mysteriously. Firduzi Zahedi, a fierce opposer of the President of Iran, Ahmadinejad’s government, asks Ariel to go to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, together with Eskandar, the great Iranian guerilla so that they can meet Islam’s most charismatic Imam. He may know which terrorist group is responsible for the threat. However, Imam Turki Al Zeid is assassinated in Riyadh. His car is blown up not far from the famous university, King Saud while Eskandar and Ariel are in Rub-al-Kahli, the immense desert in the Arabian peninsula. Our adventurous heroine is to find a new meaning of life while in that uncontaminated place and she realizes she must continue what she has set out to do. Right there in the midst of the Saudi Arabian Wahabita way of life, Ariel and her companion will have unique experiences. A fantastic falcon hunt, one of the most authentic traditions of the ancient Arab world and the deep mysticism of a religious group of people that walk around Mecca’s Black Stone. Meanwhile, in Berlin, the hitman, who killed Tomas Kuchta, the Czech Euro MP in Brussels, is being hunted down by the Kripo (Kriminal Polizei). He is also known to be involved in Balkan Mafia dealings as well as the theft of a priceless work of art. The theft, which was commissioned by a powerful Russian oligarch who wanted to add this work of art to his collection, was carried out by a clever professional thief, specialized in stealing works of art and old jewellery. The case is in the hands of Kripo Chief, Joseph Beckhart, helped by the famous criminologist and novelist Ilde Hertl whom we have previously met in the “Secret Koran”, the second book in the Islamic series. The thief, a kind of 21st century Belgian Arsenio Lupin, manages to frame “his clients” with his ingenious sleights of hand. Ariel, who is now in Cairo tracking down the people who want to pollute Belgium’s aqueducts, is attacked and saved by Ralf Stennel the man who loves her and would like to marry her. But Ariel, once again, rejects him as she is in love with the magnificent Iranian Che Guevara The story continues to unfold with unexpected turns of events. Eskandar is killed in Iraq during a Commando mission against Shiite extremists. A heartbroken Ariel is the victim of yet another attack. In Berlin a M.I.T. (Turkish Secret Service) agent, Ahmet Gurkan, gives Ilde Hertl new information on how to solve the very complicated international matter involving the Iran of Ayatollahs. Finally, the plot is revealed and the guilty person is the most unlikely one as it should be in any self- respecting thriller. Mariella Alberini, once again, manages to keep the reader enthralled, right up to the end, by conjuring up ancient places and images, full of history and strong fascination in a very up-to-date novel which anticipates the political situations and events of the troubled period we are living in.
